Description:

Haunt My House is a thrilling team-building game designed for 3 to 6 players, all immersed in a single VR headset, with a central focus on passthrough technology. In this unique experience, effective communication and seamless teamwork are the keys to success.

Players assume distinct roles, working together to confront and banish malevolent spirits haunting their shared environment. Each participant has a unique perspective, necessitating collaboration to solve a series of intricate puzzles within a limited timeframe.

Upon entering the game from the main menu, players must momentarily block out their physical surroundings, enabling real-life objects to influence the virtual realm. Once this transition is complete, puzzles emerge, challenging the team to combine their expertise to solve them. Each successfully resolved puzzle earns the team points, triggering the appearance of the next puzzle. The objective is to accumulate as many points as possible within the allocated time. The game culminates with a collective score, offering players a chance to either return to the main menu or engage in another attempt to surpass their previous high score.

Development Team:

  • Developed by a team of 9 individuals, including myself, who previously worked on Temporal Tenacity.

  • Completed over the course of 9 months.

My Contributions:

  • Concept Development: Actively participated in brainstorming sessions to generate initial concepts and gameplay mechanics.

  • Asset List Creation: Developed comprehensive asset lists for the game, ensuring clarity in asset requirements.

  • Innovative Mechanics: Proposed innovative gameplay mechanics, such as utilizing the microphone on VR headsets for immersive player interactions.

  • Research in VR Design Philosophy: Conducted in-depth research into VR design philosophy, drawing inspiration from successful titles.

  • Sound Design: Provided design input related to sound design and its effective use in creating atmosphere.

  • Banishing Guide Creation: Compiled and formatted the physical banishing guide accompanying the game, drawing inspiration from classic game manuals.

Challenges and Reflections:

Throughout the development process, encountered challenges and uncertainties regarding the project's direction mainly arising from the failure of the team to consult the prepared documentation resolved by sitting them down and having them all read the prepare documents together. However, playing with the team was enjoyable and productive, akin to playing cooperative games like "Overcooked 2." The final banishing guide, while facing minor issues, was a delightful addition to the game, demonstrating the potential for unique and engaging design within the VR space.

Conclusion:

My contributions to Haunt My House encompassed various aspects of development, including concept ideation, asset management, innovative design, and crafting immersive components. This project expanded my understanding of VR design and opened my eyes to new avenues of game design. With further development and refinement, Haunt My House has the potential to become a captivating and distinctive gaming experience.
